Kohala Cowgirl Farms
Welcome to Kohala Cowgirls Farm, where the spirit of aloha meets sustainable agriculture in the heart of Kohala, Big Island of Hawaii.
Rooted in the rich agricultural history of Kohala, our farm is a testament to the enduring legacy of hard work, family, and connection to the 'āina (land). We carry forward a heritage deeply intertwined with these fertile lands.
The family's story begins with our grandfather, who journeyed from the Philippines to work on Kohala's sugar plantations. Like many families in the area, the family's lives were shaped by the rhythm of plantation life, where community and hard work went hand in hand2. As the sugar industry faded, the family's connection to the land remained strong, evolving with the changing times.
At Kohala Cowgirls Farm, we embrace the concept of "Community Forward Farm" practices. This philosophy is deeply rooted in the Hawaiian values of mālama 'āina (caring for the land) and laulima (cooperation). We believe that by nurturing the land, we nurture our community, creating a sustainable cycle of prosperity and well-being.
Our approach to farming is inspired by the ancient Hawaiian ahupua'a system, where land was managed from mountain to sea, ensuring balance and self-sufficiency. We strive to honor this wisdom by implementing sustainable practices that preserve our natural resources for future generations.
